1 Corinthians 15:25-26 ‘For He (Christ) must reign….’
(Greek meaning of the word reign – rule, to be King) It is not a matter of will reign, or may reign, or can reign, it is a matter of the fact that He must reign. Modern society does not appreciate the word ‘must’. We prefer words like ‘should’, ‘could’ and ‘may’. But when it comes to Jesus there is only one option and that is that He must reign. In the country where we live we are currently experiencing a drought. It is said to be the worst drought in decades. It intrigues me how self-reliant we think we are until God shuts up the heavens. It is when these things happen that we realise how, by just withholding the rain, we can be brought low. It reminds me how dependent we are on God. Kings and kingdoms throughout the ages have believed that they will last forever and none have. We may feel untouchable, but we are utterly dependant on the fact that God reigns over all things. We should never question if He should reign, but we should believe that He must reign. He must reign, because He was born to be King.
Matthew 2:1-2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star when it rose and have come to worship Him.’
It was a settled matter for the wise men and it should be a settled matter for us. He must reign, why? Because He deserves to be King. What He went through should remind us that there is no one more qualified than our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He must reign, because there is no one who will stop Him from reigning.
