A DESIRE TO PRAY
We know that when Jesus was on earth, there were occasions when He prayed and some of these occasions where witnessed by the disciples. The result was that they also had a desire to pray.
Luke 11:1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray”.
Notice two things:
1. Even though they walked with Jesus and were known as disciples they still needed clarity in the issue of prayer.
2. There was a desire within them to pray, especially as they had seen Jesus doing.
A desire to pray is a good thing. We often complicate the matter and end up not praying. Let us trust that there will be a new stirring within us and a new desire to pray.
JESUS GIVES THE PATTERN
In response to the request from the disciples, Jesus gives them a pattern as to how to pray. You can read about it in Luke 11:2-4
A. Remember, we are praying to our Father!
‘Our Father in heaven, …’
B. He must always be highly respected!
‘ … hallowed be your name.’
C. His kingdom must always be a priority to us!
‘ … Your kingdom come …’
D. We must always do His will!
‘ … Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’
E. We must look to Him as the source of all things.
‘Give us day by day our daily bread.’
F. He is the One who forgives our sin!
‘ … and forgive us our sins, … ‘
G. We need to forgive others!
‘ … for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.’
H. Only God can lead us away from temptation!
‘ … and do not lead us into temptation, … ‘
I. He can give us victory!
‘ … but deliver us from the evil one.’
