PERSISTENCE IS IMPORTANT
Persistence is an important part of prayer. There has tended to be a message that we should just pray once. The Bible has a different emphasis.
Luke 11:5-8 Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this illustration: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You would shout up to him, ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit and I’ve nothing to give him to eat.’ He would call down from his bedroom, ‘Please don’t ask me to get up. The door is locked for the night and we are all in bed. I just can’t help you this time.’ “But I’ll tell you this—though he won’t do it as a friend, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you everything you want—just because of your persistence.
We should come and ask again and again and again. There is another example in Luke 18:1-8. Persistence is an important key in prayer.
ASK, SEEK AND KNOCK
Luke 11:9 So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Remember these are the words of Jesus. The words ask, seek and knock, are all in the present tense. This means is that we should be continually asking, seeking, knocking. There is something very direct in the way in which Jesus says these words. It is almost as if they are an instruction or a command. If that is the case, the best thing we could do is take it to heart. Asking, seeking and knocking are things that we can do. This aspect encourages a little bit of determination in my heart.
