HIS MESSAGE WAS ADDRESSED TO A SPECIFIC CATEGORY OF PEOPLE.
John 7:37 Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty…..’
It was a message to those who fell into the category of thirsty. The area in which this story plays out is an arid region. Water is a valuable commodity and the concept of being thirsty would have been understood by the people who were listening. But thirst is also a basic human condition that we can all grasp and understand. It is as relevant today as it was in that day. Every aspect of our physical lives requires water Just to be able to function normally we need water. Thirst is an indication from within our physical bodies of a need. Physically, if we do not respond to our thirst, it can lead to painful consequences and if left unattended can be fatal. So our natural bodies desperately need water. Now Jesus uses this natural picture to help understand how great our spiritual need is. In the same way, without this spiritual water, we can also suffer painful consequences and without it over time it can lead to a form of death within us. Thirst indicates urgency. If we do not respond to our thirst, we will eventually stop being thirsty and that brings with it its own results. Thirst is a craving, it is a basic instinct and it is an essential mechanism. There are receptors in our bodies that detect a shortage of water. I believe that there are receptors in our spiritual dimension that also detect that we have a shortage of God in our lives and it produces a spiritual thirst and we know it needs to be addressed and satisfied. This is what causes people to search in so many different directions; because something within them tells them that if this aspect is not satisfied they will be in trouble.
HE OFFERS LIVING WATER DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE – HIMSELF!
John 7:37 Saying, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.’
The invitation is very clear: ‘Come to Me…!’ There is something we need to do. We must ‘come to Him’. We know this water that He wanted to give was in fact the Holy Spirit. The effect of this living water to our spiritual lives could be compared to the effect of water to a thirsty physical body. It would relieve the thirst. It would satisfy the soul. It would stop the pain. It would allay the fears. It would strengthen, refresh and revive us. The soul that feels as if it is dying would live again. Strength and joy would return. Like physical water, this living water would come and cleanse, purify and remove the contaminations that have collected over time. Some years ago, my eldest daughter become very ill and it was accompanied with high fever. After many Doctor’s visits and lots of medication she was still not recovering. Eventually we took her to a specialist and he took one look at her and said that his child would not be able to recover on her own. She needed urgent intervention. She was admitted to hospital and a drip with medication was administered. Slowly she recovered and the life that had seemed to have been drained out of her, slowly returned and she recovered fully. We can’t do it on our own. We need external intervention and there is only one source! He is the source and He is the only one who can give you what your very soul needs and longs for. So come to Him today.
