GOD DEALS WITH THE PROUD
It is very clear from scripture that God deals with the proud.
1 Peter 5:5 For God sets Himself against the proud (and He opposes, frustrates, and defeats them)
Note these things:
1. God sets Himself against the proud.
2. God opposes the proud.
3. God frustrates the proud.
4. God defeats the proud.
5. God resists the proud.
1 Peter 5:5-6 But God gives grace (favor, blessing) to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you.
Note these things:
1. God gives grace to the humble.
2. God gives favor to the humble.
3. God gives blessing to the humble.
4. God exalts the humble.
1 Peter 5:5 God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. NKJV
We are advised to humble ourselves.
1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you.
Matthew 23:12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. (Jesus speaking)
It is better for you and I to deal with pride than for God to deal with it!
CALLING ON GOD IS ALWAYS THE RIGHT THING TO DO
When we turn to God and call on Him it shows our dependence on God. When we turn to God and call on Him, we are in effect humbling ourselves. For each of us, we need to get to the place of ‘desperate dependence’ on God. I recently met with a friend of mine. He has been a successful businessman for many years. He told me how he used to wait on God in all the decisions he had to make in his business. He had written down the things that God told him to do in a book. Now, things are not going so well and when he went to check this book, he realized that he had not written in it for 5 years. He had moved from ‘dependency on God’ to ‘self dependency’ and this had brought him close to destruction. When pride comes in we think we no longer need God and we think we can do it in our own strength and ability. But we can always return to a place of dependency by humbling ourselves and calling on God. Calling on God is always the right thing to do. The Apostle had also called on the Lord.
2 Corinthians 12:8 ‘Three times I called upon the Lord and besought [Him] about this and begged that it might depart from me.’
