1 John 3:4-6 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
What does it mean, Jesus was manifested? Well, Jesus existed long before he was born as a baby in Bethlehem. Jesus existed long before – He is from eternity to eternity. He is eternal Father! But when He was born, what actually happened is, the One whom we had never seen, was suddenly manifested and the curtain was drawn aside and we could see the God who had appeared as the Angel of the Lord in the Old Testament. God was manifested in the flesh! And He was manifested to take away our sins (vs 5). And the good news I have for you is that it does not matter what sin you have committed! It does not matter how many sins you have committed or if other people know about the sins you have committed. The Good News is that Jesus came to take our sins.
If I were privileged to speak in a prison I could say to those inmates, “Jesus came to take away your sins.” And as I began to read these verses I noticed that it began to say, in vs 5 that in Him was no sin. He was sinless. And look at vs 6, a very important statement “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.” And as I began to read this in its context and a couple of verses around this, I saw that these verses teach us THREE important facts:
FACT 1: Sin is the transgressing of the law of God.
How many of you have driven in your car, got to a stop street, and have not stopped properly? You just slow down, have a look for traffic, and then just continue. And something happens inside of you … does it? Do you know deep within you that this was not the right thing to do? Like a buzzer inside of you that it was wrong? Your conscience gets a hold of you.
But if you keep on doing it, the voice of conscience keeps on getting softer and softer and now eventually you are getting quite good at this. And a person begins to go through a stop street and not even feel bad about it! But one day, when you have really got used to it now, you slip through the stop street and as you look up, you see a traffic officer and he’s got his hand up showing you to stop. All of a sudden your heart starts beating rapidly, you tell the officer you did not mean to not stop. Actually …. that’s a lie. Sin is the transgression of the law and sometimes we get so used to sinning that it does not bother us until the law appears. Then it bothers us again.
Therefore ALL have sinned! This is confirmed in other scriptures.
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
This is evident as we look at others. This is evident as we look at our own lives. All have transgressed God’s Law – the Ten Commandments.
Exodus 20:1-2 “And God spoke all these words saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”
