The Bible speaks of the refiner’s fire. This is the process we go through in developing pure hearts. It is as though what should not be there is burned away. Often times this refining process takes place through the circumstances and situations we face in life. God is at work within each one of us. We know that all things work together for our good if we love God. The greatest joy is to know that God is both interested in and watches our progress as we face this refining fire.
Malachi 3:3 ‘Like a refiner of silver He will sit and closely watch as the dross is burned away. He will purify. … refining them like gold or silver, so that they will do their work for God with pure hearts.’
Our hearts are even more important to God than what our circumstances are. Think of Joseph who sat in jail until the matters of the heart had been resolved. Think of Moses who wondered the wilderness for many years while God worked in his heart and all this while the nation of Israel was suffering.
