By Pastor Ed Roebert
One of the first results of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and of the inspired message of Peter was, A REAL CONVICTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts 2:37 “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Conviction is a sense of guilt that the Holy Spirit brings on us! – It’s a realization that we stand guilty before the Lord! It is not aimed at bringing us into condemnation but to repentance and forgiveness! Conviction is one of the marks of true revival!
Peter then clearly instructs them what they must DO to be released from this conviction!
Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them:
- “Repent, … ” – This involves confession and a right-about-turn.
- “ … and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” – Baptism confirms that our past life is dead, therefore it is buried! Baptism is also a sign of the fact that our sins have already been washed away by the blood of Jesus!
- “… and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Repentance and baptism prepares the way for us to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit! Have you taken the necessary steps to prepare yourself for receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit?
Peter then makes it clear that the gift of the Holy Spirit is for ALL CHRISTIANS!
Acts 2:39 For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.
