A ROCK IS A PICTURE OF STRENGTH (A Diamond)
A rock is strong and it takes a great deal of force to break and crack it. The Hebrew word for the word strength is army. God is our strength, He is our army. The Greek original speaks of power. He gives us the power we need. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
A ROCK IS A PICTURE OF STABILITY
A rock is something that does not easily change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. It is something that is not easily moved. Because God is in our lives we do not need to fear being moved or shaken. A rock is a picture of firmness and stability. Because of this we do not need to feel insecure or precarious.
A ROCK IS A PICTURE OF SOMETHING THAT IS ENDURING
We have a small farm that has belonged to our family for many years. I estimate that it was surveyed and laid out about 200 years ago. At the time the surveyor placed large rocks at the points of the property. These rocks were planted to indicated the boundary. Today some of the rocks still stand. They have endured, while the actual fences have been replaced numerous times, these rocks stand as an enduring reminder. The picture of a rock is a picture of something lasting.
There is a timeless, ageless, perpetual and ongoing aspect to rocks. It is for this very reason that we place them on graves as an enduring reminder. This is a picture of God, enduring, timeless and ageless.
A ROCK IS A PICTURE OF SOMETHING THAT IS NOT EASILY DESTROYED
It takes a great deal of time for them to be eroded and worn down. A rock is not easily destroyed. So it is also with God. Many have tried to wipe out the knowledge of God. Some have tried removing the Bible and burning it. Some tried to enforce systems (Communism) that remove God from the equation of life. But He remains and the Christian faith remains strong.
A ROCK IS A PICTURE OF SOMETHING FROM ANOTHER ERA AND ANOTHER DIMENSION
Why would we want to bring back rocks from the moon? Because there is something locked up in them that speaks of another era and another dimension. There is something about God that intrigues us. We know that there is more to life than simply what meets the eye. We know there is another dimension. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
