Matthew 7:24-29
The Bible uses metaphors to help us understand more of the nature and character of God. A metaphor is one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest how they are similar.
One of these comparisons that the Bible uses is a picture of a rock. The Bible uses this analogy to help us understand an aspect of the greatness and wonder of God.
Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Perhaps you have heart this term used in another context? Some people may say: ‘My mother was my rock! or ‘My husband/wife is my rock!’ What does it mean when we say this type of thing? It means that that person was a source of strength and a source of stability and security.
When the Bible refers to God as a rock, it is much the same but to a much greater degree. The picture of God as our rock gives us a striking insight into His very nature and character. What characteristics can we learn about God from the analogy of a rock? Even the enemies of Israel understood that the God of Israel was a rock like no other.
Deuteronomy 32:31 But the rock of our enemies is not like our Rock, as even they recognize.
The enemies also had their rocks, their idols of stone or of wood, but even they knew that their rock was of little value. They recognized that the God of Israel was a rock indeed.
