During the course of life we face many and varied tests and trials. Just like the physical tests we wrote at school, we need to sit the test and pass the test. Times of trials and test can be challenging times. Sometimes we may wish that we could just escape or bypass the test. But life is not like that. I have discovered that if we don’t pass the test we end up going around the mountain again and face the same test, again and again until we pass it. However, once we pass the test we can move on to the next thing. So the answer is to pass the test so that we can move on.
However much we would prefer to just float through life, the truth is that tests and trials are part of life. They are inevitable as we pass through the various stages of life. They are to be expected. It is not possible to evade or avoid them. They will come in one form or another into our lives. The tests I may need to pass through will in all likelihood be different from those that you have to face and deal with. But just as it is impossible to take a bath without getting wet, it is impossible to pass through life without facing tests. The question is what should our response be to these tests we need to face?
James 1:2-4 ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.’
The word ‘trials’ can mean times of tests, times of being tried, times of temptation and times of calamity or affliction. Positive tests – exams. Tests that allow us to establish how far we have come and as a result allowing us to move forward. Negative tests – temptation. Tests to establish our resolve and our ability to stand when other things could sidetrack us. The truth is that tests are an inevitable part of life.
