John 15:1-4 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
The picture of a vine and a branch speaks to me of relationship. A branch cut off from the vine soon withers and dies. Jesus is offering us a relationship that is intimate and life-giving. Are you enjoying this connected relationship with Jesus?
John 15:4 Take care to live in me, and let me live in you. For a branch can’t produce fruit when severed from the vine. Nor can you be fruitful apart from me.
In a vine there is a flow of life-giving sap from the vine to the branch. When we live in the relationship that Jesus has offered us there is a flow of life from God to us. This flow of life gives us what we need to be effective Christians.
