What the Bible says about giving

Daily Thought

Your Word for 26 July 2024

Psalm 143:10
‘Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. May Your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.’

  1. Give ourselves to the Lord first!

2 Corinthians 8:5  And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.

2. Give willingly.

2 Corinthians 8:3  For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own.
2 Corinthians 8:12  For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.

3. Give cheerfully (hilariously).

2 Corinthians 9:7  Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

4. Give generously, liberally.

2 Corinthians 8:2  In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
2 Corinthians 9:13  Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.

5. Give proportionately.

2 Corinthians 9:6  Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
2 Corinthians 8:14-15  At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”

6. Give regularly.

1 Corinthians 16:1-2  Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

7. Give systematically.

2 Corinthians 9:7  Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

8. Give lovingly.

2 Corinthians 8:24  Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.

9. Give thankfully.

2 Corinthians 9:11-12  You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.   This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

10. Give as a ministry to the Lord and His saints.

2 Corinthians 9:12-13 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.

Additional scripture references:
Luke 6:38  “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, have an abundance for every good work.”
2 Corinthians 8:9 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”
