The principle of accountability

Daily Thought

Your Word for 27 November 2024

Psalm 94:14                NLT
‘The LORD will not reject His people; He will not abandon His special possession.’

Accountability is a principle that is enforced in the New Testament.

THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

Matthew 25:14-15 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man travelling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.”

A talent was a large sum of money. A silver talent could be worth as much as R7,200:00 and a gold talent R100,000:00, according to Dr John Walvoord in his Commentary on Matthew. Therefore, five talents could be worth anything between R36,000:00 and R500,000:00.
Each of the servants did what they felt was right with these talents.
Matthew 25:16-18

  • The first servant traded and made another five talents.
  • The second servant also traded and made another two talents.
  • The third servant dug a hole in the earth and hid his talent.

The day to give an account came!
Matthew 25:19-28   Verse 19 says,

“After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.”

  • Their rewards were according to their faithfulness.
  • The first two servants received the same award.
  • The third servant was rated as wicked and slothful by his master.

Matthew 25:26-28
This is a clear example of accountability!
We are accountable to God for all that He has given us; for our life’s partner, our children, our giftings and abilities AND for the material and financial blessings He gives  us!
