The disciples of Jesus first received the Holy Spirit and then were BAPTISED in the Spirit – that is, they were filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time!
After His resurrection Jesus appeared to His disciples, breathed on them and said, “RECEIVE ye the Holy Spirit”.
John 20:19-22 Then, the same day… Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” Now when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Just before His ascension, Jesus said that His disciples would BE BAPTISED in the Holy Spirit “not many days from now”. [Read Acts 1:1 – 9].
Acts 1:5 “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT NOT MANY DAYS FROM NOW.”
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
It was John the Baptist that told us that JESUS would baptise us in the Holy Spirit!
Baptism in the Spirit is first and foremost an encounter with Jesus!
Luke 3:16 John answered, saying to them all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
